INCREASED SECURITY FOR ONLINE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS First Data launches 3D-Secure protection in pilot implementation Frankfurt, April 29, 2009 First Data, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing services, and Bayern Card-Services GmbH (BCS), have announced the recent launch of a pilot 3D-Secure implementation for three savings banks in Germany. The security standard, which operates under the names MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa, was implemented for the banks' full MasterCard and Visa card portfolios. The end of the pilot phase, scheduled for late summer 2009, will be followed by a 3D-Secure rollout to all savings banks supported by the two service providers in Germany. First Data plans to incorporate this product into the standard set of services from January 1, 2010 onwards. 3D-Secure is a technical solution that offers registered cardholders increased security levels when shopping online, by incorporating a password-based authentication process to support the entry of credit card data. This occurs for each online payment transacted in the online shops of enrolled merchants. By participating in the program, merchants have the added benefit that, if the credit cardholder contests the order or in the event of a fraud incident, the risks of chargebacks are avoided. The introduction of 3D-Secure provides issuers and cardholders with additional protection for online transactions and offers banks the possibility to significantly reduce the risk of payment loss resulting from internet payment transactions. In the framework of the joint venture, Bayern Card-Services GmbH is responsible for providing support to the savings banks and, together with CommuniGate, providing cardholder customer care, while First Data is responsible for providing processing services.
